The Anacostia Coordinating Council: Building a Stronger Community Through Action

The Jane Bancroft Robinson Foundation is proud to be part of the of East of the Anacostia River community. We see the triumphs and challenges of this community every day—the untold stories of resilience, of women and families fighting for better opportunities, of neighborhoods full of potential yet often overlooked. That’s why we’ve always been deeply inspired by the work of the Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC), whose vision and dedication echo our own.

Founded in 1983, ACC was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: that the people who live in Anacostia should have a voice in their future. What began with the fight to build the Anacostia Metro Station soon grew into a movement of collective action. In this space, residents, leaders, and organizations could unite to address the issues that matter most to them. Today, ACC is much more than an advocacy group—it’s a hub of empowerment, a place where the community’s dreams, challenges, and solutions come to life.

The heart of ACC lies in its ability to foster a sense of belonging. From monthly community meetings to meaningful partnerships, ACC has always been a place where people are not only heard but truly valued. Over the years, they’ve welcomed hundreds of voices—each bringing their own experiences, ideas, and perspectives. These voices, together, have built a movement of change that is rooted in unity, trust, and a shared commitment to lifting each other.

As an organization focused on Black women’s empowerment, especially those living in Anacostia and surrounding neighborhoods, JBRF finds immense value in the Anacostia Coordinating Council’s work. We see in their efforts a reflection of our own mission: to ensure that every woman has access to the resources, support, and opportunities she deserves. For us, it’s not just about addressing disparities—but about changing the narrative, building confidence, and creating a future where every Black woman can thrive.

Whether it’s advocating for equitable development, pushing for policy changes, or organizing events that bring the community together, ACC’s work has always been about more than just the present. It’s about shaping the future. Just like ACC, we know that the path to real change doesn’t come from the top down; it comes from the ground up, from the people who live, breathe, and fight for this community every day. The kind of change that’s sustainable, the kind that lasts, is the kind that’s rooted in the community itself. This is what ACC understands so deeply.

One of the most striking aspects of ACC’s work is its ability to connect people—to create spaces where relationships and trust can flourish. From the monthly Faith Leaders Breakfast to the impactful Annual Luncheon Cruise, ACC knows that building community is about building bonds that goes beyond discussing issues. It’s these connections that make it possible for ACC to have such a profound impact, and it reminds us of the power of unity in the face of adversity.

At JBRF, we are energized by this same sense of unity. The work we do with women is rooted in the understanding that empowerment is a collective effort. Advocating for better job opportunities, improving health outcomes, or breaking down barriers to success is a collective mission, and we know that there is so much we can do when we stand together. Like ACC, we believe that by lifting up one woman, one family, one neighborhood at a time, we create a ripple effect that changes everything.

Looking to the future, we are filled with hope and excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead. We know that the work of ACC is far from over, and neither is ours. At JBRF, we believe in the power of community—and we know that, just like ACC, we are stronger when we come together. As we continue to build a more equitable and vibrant East of the River, we invite you to join us through supporting local events, attending community meetings, or simply lending your voice.  The Anacostia Coordinating Council’s work is a testament to the extraordinary resilience and potential of the people of Anacostia. Their commitment to creating real change is not just admirable—it’s transformative. Whether it’s through strengthening our partnerships, supporting community initiatives, or advocating for policy change, the opportunities for collaboration between JBRF and ACC are limitless. As we continue to work side by side with them, we are reminded that the future is brighter when we walk toward it together.
